Our First Community Clean-Up of the Season Clears Donholm's Drainage Channels

Before dawn on a recent Saturday, more than thirty residents gathered along Donholm's main footpaths with gloves, sacks and rakes in hand. The target for the day was simple but overdue: the drainage channels that carry rainwater off the estate's streets, which had slowly filled with plastic wrappers, silt and dumped household waste over the dry months.

By mid-morning, the team had cleared several stretches of channel that had been backing up during even light showers, flooding footpaths and pooling near compound gates. Sorting the waste as they went, volunteers separated recyclable plastics from general refuse, a habit that has become standard at every clean-up we run.

This is exactly the kind of work our Constitution commits us to: organising and coordinating community clean-up campaigns and promoting proper solid waste management. A blocked drain is a small thing until the rains come, and then it becomes standing water, mosquitoes and damaged footpaths. Clearing it early is cheap prevention.

What made this clean-up different was how many first-time volunteers showed up after hearing about it through neighbours rather than a formal announcement. That is the pattern we want to see more of: word passing naturally from one household to the next, because people can see the channels running clear again.

We will be back on this stretch before the next rains to check the channels have stayed clear, and we are already looking at two more sections of Donholm that need the same attention. If your street has a blocked drain or a dumping spot that keeps filling back up, get in touch and we will add it to the roster.
