A Realistic Look at How Much a Household Clean-Up Kit Actually Costs

A question we get often from residents wanting to organise a small clean-up on their own street, without waiting for us to schedule one, is simply: what do I actually need to buy, and how much does it cost?

The essentials are heavy-duty sacks for waste, gloves for anyone handling it directly, and at least one rake or garden fork for clearing overgrown or compacted areas. Sourced locally rather than from a supermarket, this basic kit for a small group of five or six volunteers is genuinely inexpensive, well within what a handful of households can split between them.

Corners that can reasonably be cut include branded or heavy-duty gloves, which ordinary household gloves handle fine for general litter and light debris, and specialised tools, since a single shared rake or fork usually covers a small group's needs without everyone needing their own.

Corners that should not be cut are protective footwear for anyone near broken glass or metal, and clear labelling of sacks by waste type if there is any chance of getting them to a recycling buyer afterward, since unsorted material loses that option entirely.

For anything larger than a single street or involving riparian land, we would rather be brought in directly, both for the additional tools we can bring and because larger or hazardous sites sometimes need coordination with Nairobi County that an informal group cannot easily arrange on its own.
